There’s nothing you have to have for a home office. However, there are a lot of things that are commonly found in them. Whether you’re working from home or using it as your evil empire’s command center, here’s what we think you’ll find in a home office. Let’s explore.
Workstation
Whether you stand, sit, dance, or pace, you need a workstation. It’s not a home office unless it has something for you to “office” at.
Good Lighting
Good lighting doesn’t mean the same thing for each person. A painter may want natural light whereas a gamer might want as little light as possible. What matters is that the light is right for you. I’ve found that most people gravitate towards the place that works best for them when it comes to lighting.
Separate
I do most of my work at our dining room table. It’s nice. I can tend to my daughter’s needs. And, I can feel apart of the activity once my wife gets home from work. I prefer to work there most days. However, if I need to really focus, it’s good to have a separate place. For me, it’s the upstairs guest room. We added a desk, chair, and a good amount of office-y storage. Bonus, our guest room has an amazing view of our backyard and the forest behind our house.
A home office needs to be separate from the rest of the house. It obviously can have dual purposes. However, the separation gives it the office feel.
A Plan For Your Home Office
It’s one thing to say it’s an office. However, it’s truly a home office if you have a plan for it. We have a guest room upstairs that I regularly work in. However, it wasn’t a suitable home office until I made a plan and organized it properly.
There you have it. That’s what I think you need to have. I probably missed several things that are just as important. Feel free to comment and let me know what I’ve left out.
